What is the link between genetics and cancer?

All types of cancer are caused by a genetic defect. While most cases are caused randomly, in some cases, cancer develops due to hereditary predisposition.  

The medical discipline of oncogenetics involves research into the link between genetics and hereditary cancer. This is a new territory with, far-reaching knowhow which, using advanced genetic tests, enables identification of certain genetic defects which may result in increased risk to develop cancer. The most common inherited cancer syndromes are Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome, hereditary colorectal and endometrial cancers. 

Who is advised to come to GNA Medical for genetic counseling?

  • Individuals and families concerned of being at high risk of developing cancer due to:
    • Multiple cancer cases in the family
    • Onset of cancer in a family member at a relatively young age (under 50)
    • Identification of a genetic mutation in a family member
    • Women of Ashkenazi origin above the age of 25
    • Family history that is unclear for various reasons (such as adoption, egg/sperm donation)
  • Current or previous oncological patients
  • Any individual interested in defining his personal risk level of developing cancer relative to the general population 

Counseling aims

    • Evaluation of the personal and familial risk level of developing a malignant disease due to inherited factors 
    • Designing a personal plan for early detection or risk reduction 
    • Assessing the need for genetic testing and selection of the relevant tests. The tests are performed simply and easily on the spot by taking a sample of blood or saliva.
    • For current and previous cancer patients – better diagnosis of disease characteristics for the prevention of future or recurrent disease; assessment of the risk level of family members such as children, siblings, uncles/aunts

Evaluation appointment

A personal appointment for initial evaluation of the risk of developing cancer based on familial-genetic background. The need for genetic testing will be evaluated based on review of the subject's personal and familial medical history, and the subject will receive an explanation about the aims of the test and its possible consequences.   

Genetic test

If it is decided to perform a genetic test, it can be performed on the spot by simply taking a sample of blood or saliva. The sample will be sent to certified laboratories in Israel or overseas. The results will be obtained within several weeks, depending on the type of test and the laboratory involved. The center collaborates with several leading laboratories to offer a broad range of advanced and reliable genetic tests.      

Personalized medical recommendations

Depending on the test results and based on the evaluation appointment, the subject will receive a detailed risk assessment and personalized medical recommendations from Prof. Eitan Friedman.  The recommendations will be provided at the next appointment or in a written report. Women at high risk are offered a unique follow up package at Mor Women’s Center, Ramat Aviv or referral to Meirav Breast Center at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer.
